AAR Expands Repair Capabilities with Avtron Hydraulic Test System

GARDEN CITY, New York, September 12, 2013 – AAR (NYSE: AIR) announces the implementation of an Avtron Aerospace Hydraulic Component Test System capable of evaluating a wider range of commercial hydraulic products installed on next-generation aircraft.

The new technology enables the facility to replicate aircraft hydraulic pressures, demands and flow rates specified in testing requirements for a variety of components used in newer fleets. The ability to produce 5,000 psi pressures and capture data via computer ensures AAR can support the next generation of 787s, A350s and other platforms. Solid state devices also represent an improvement over current equipment.

The new hydraulic testing capability is part of a broad range of component repair, overhaul and exchange services offered by AAR through its Aircraft Component Services facilities in New York and Amsterdam.

"Not only are the newer components more complex, the aircraft systems are driven by much higher pressures. This cutting-edge system from Avtron lets us easily handle both of those challenges."

Avtron Designs Spirited Test System for University Engineering Lab

Over the summer, Avtron Aerospace was proud to commission a 350 horsepower, 30,000 RPM, AC drive test system for a University's Engineering Department Laboratory. This custom test system will be spinning aircraft starter/generators for the development of advanced Silicon Carbide and Gallium Arsenide power conversion electronics. The system is comprised of a Vacon NXC series AC drive, with control and data acquisition through National Instruments Compact DAQ chassis and modules. A computer with redundant RAID hard drives and two large HD monitors provides an intuitive interface for the operator control and data displays. System software was custom designed to meet the unique requirements of this customer and allows for control and data transmission over Ethernet. Engineered to be failsafe, the system has many automated protections including a microprocessor based safety switch to handle emergency system shutdowns. The appearance of the system was designed with school spirit in mind.

This project was a particular source of pride for many Avtron Engineers and Staff. A considerable amount of the design work for this project originated from two Avtron Engineers, graduates of the University's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Avtron Leads A380 Engine-Driven Pump Testing with Korean Air

We are proud to announce that Korean Airlines has successfully completed the testing of the A380 engine-driven pump (EDP) at their Busan, South Korea, component repair facility. Using a standard Avtron H502 test stand and Avtron's Data Acquisition System (ADASTM), engineering teams from Korean Air and Avtron Aerospace worked together to complete this milestone in expanded MRO capability.

The eight engine-driven pumps on the A380 are rated at 5000psi and deliver 48 gallons of hydraulic fluid per minute, producing an 1120hp system-more than three times the hydraulic system horsepower generated on most commercial aircraft. A majority of the test bench designs currently in service at MRO facilities worldwide do not provide the pressure ratings and capability required to support newer aircraft platforms such as the A380 and B787. Korean Air selected Avtron Aerospace's next generation of universal test systems to upgrade their component repair capabilities to support the aircraft platforms of the future.

The Korean Air project leader, Mr. Jaemun Kim, summarized this accomplishment by saying, "We are very proud to have successfully completed this strategic milestone. The deployment of our remote controlled 5000psi hydraulic test capability using the (Avtron) H502 has been a success. The technical cooperation between Korean Air and Avtron Aerospace has been excellent. In the coming months we will work together with Avtron Aerospace engineering to complete testing of the A380 electric motor driven pumps (EMDP) using the Avtron H502 test stand and data acquisition system."

The four A380 AC electric motor-driven pumps present additional and new control requirements for component repair shops.
